Benefits, Time- and Cost-Saving Analysis for MEMORehab in a Public Hospital

A plant growing in a jar of coins

We often get asked by clinicians working in public hospitals whether MEMORehab is cost effective - and it is! We also know that this type of information can be critical when speaking to decision makers about running the program. So, to help demonstrate the benefits of running MEMORehab in a hospital setting, we have formulated the following cost saving calculations based on hospitals currently running the program.

Importantly, before presenting our own estimates, we would like to share some independently sourced evidence provided by clinical departments running the program as presented at this year's ASSBI conference:

In addition to discussing cost effectiveness, it is important to consider that MEMORehab does more than just save your department money. It is an all inclusive program designed to support both patients through their rehabilitation experience, and the clinicians running it. Here are the benefits of using MEMORehab as opposed to a face-to-face program:

Now for the cost saving estimates. We have calculated these figures based on both the time taken to run the program, and direct costs (for both neuropsychologists and occupational therapists):

Time Savings (per year)

MEMORehab

In-house/Face-to-face

Group setup time

0.5h * 6g = 3h

1h * 6 groups = 6h

Weekly prep/admin time

0.25h 6s 6g = 9h

1h 6s 6g = 36h

Session delivery time

1.25h 6s 6g * 2c = 90h

2.25h 6s 6g * 2c = 162h

Content preparation

0h

40h

TOTAL

102h

244h

MEMORehab saves ~142 hours of clinician time

h = hours, g = groups, s = sessions, c = clinician

MEMORehab saves ~$4,326 - $5,362 in operating costs

(Savings in favour of MEMORehab increase with the number of interventions run).

Assumptions:

  1. Assumption is delivery by clinician to small groups of patients

  2. For a group of as many as 6 patients, 2 clinicians are deemed necessary for either intervention.  For smaller groups, only one clinician would be needed on a weekly basis.

  3. Group set up time includes initially contacting patients to verify the time (and place) of the meeting, (and for in-house) printing out handouts, booking meeting room, gathering equipment for presentation

  4. Average Occupational Therapist salary ($48.70 hour): https://au.talent.com/salary?job=occupational+therapist; Average Neuropsychologist salary ($57.5 hour): https://au.talent.com/salary?job=neuropsychologist

  5. On-costs such as superannuation and Workers Compensation calculated at 15% of employee salary
